Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art

Specialty Museum · Staten Island, New York

⚠ A HIMALAYAN MONASTERY BUILT INTO A HILLSIDE IN THE MIDDLE OF A STATEN ISLAND FOREST — two fieldstone buildings of 1945 designed to resemble a Tibetan gompa, holding one of the largest private collections of Himalayan art in the West. ⚠ IT WAS BUILT BY A WOMAN WHO NEVER WENT TO TIBET, and ⚠ THE DALAI LAMA VISITED IN 1991.

338 Lighthouse Avenue, Staten Island, New York, 10306, United States

⚠ CHECK THE OPENING DAYS BEFORE YOU TRAVEL — this is a small organisation with NARROW HOURS in the middle of Staten Island, an hour from the ferry terminal, and a wasted journey here is a long one. ⚠ IT IS SMALL: forty-five minutes to an hour, honestly, so pair it with the STATEN ISLAND GREENBELT, which surrounds it and is FREE, or with Historic Richmond Town ten minutes south. Both are in this database. ⚠ THE TERRACED GARDEN IS HALF THE VISIT and people skip it — go out onto the terrace and sit down before you leave. ⚠ PARKING IS LIMITED on a narrow residential hill road; the bus plus a short uphill walk is often easier. ⚠ MEDITATION SESSIONS, TEACHINGS AND FESTIVALS are programmed here and make for a completely different visit — check the calendar. ⚠ ASK AT THE DESK BEFORE PHOTOGRAPHING INSIDE. ⚠ HOURS AND PRICES NOT VERIFIED.
