Jaegersborg Dyrehave and Bakken

Bakken, Traditionally Dated To 1583 And Often Called The World'S Oldest Operating Amusement Park, Inside The Jaegersborg Dyrehave Deer Park, Part Of The UNESCO Par Force Hunting Landscape (2015) With The Hermitage Hunting Lodge · Klampenborg, Capital Region of Denmark

Jaegersborg Dyrehave is a royal deer park of ancient oaks, beech woods and open grassland just north of Copenhagen, and Bakken (Dyrehavsbakken) is the old-fashioned amusement park tucked into its southern edge. The deer park was enclosed for royal hunting in the 1600s and opened to the public in the 1700s; today roughly 2,000 red, fallow and sika deer roam free, and it forms part of the UNESCO-listed par force hunting landscape of North Zealand. In the middle of the great plain stands the Hermitage, a small Baroque hunting lodge from the 1730s. Bakken grew up around a holy spring that drew crowds from the 1500s, and is traditionally dated to 1583, which is why it is often called the world's oldest operating amusement park. It is free to walk in, with rides paid by ticket or wristband, beer halls, a wooden roller coaster and the clown Pjerrot. People come for a cheap, very Danish day out and a walk among deer, twenty minutes from the city. The caveat: Bakken is rougher and less polished than Tivoli, and it closes from roughly September to spring.

The deer park is open all year, day and night, and entry is free; motor traffic is banned inside. Bakken normally opens from roughly late March or April to the end of August, with rides running from about midday into the evening and restaurants later, plus some seasonal events such as Halloween or Christmas openings in some years - confirm the current season calendar and daily hours. The Hermitage lodge is usually closed inside. Take S-train line C from Copenhagen Central to Klampenborg, roughly 20-25 minutes, then walk about 10 minutes through the park gate. Nothing needs booking except shows such as the summer revue, which sells out weeks ahead.
