Jaflong
River · Jaflong, Sylhet
The best-known of Sylhet's border rivers: the Piyain comes down out of the Meghalaya hills over beds of rounded stone, with the Dawki suspension bridge visible on the Indian side and Khasia villages farming betel leaf on the banks. Jaflong is genuinely beautiful - clear winter water over pale stones with green hills stacked behind - and genuinely compromised: decades of stone extraction and crushing have scarred sections of the riverscape, and honest visitors should expect both. Go for the river, the border panorama and the Khasia punji villages, and time it for early morning before the day-trip crowds arrive from Sylhet.
Sylhet-Tamabil-Jaflong Road, Mamar Bazar, Jaflong, Sylhet, Bangladesh
Open ground with no formal gates - effectively a daylight destination, with boats running roughly 8 AM to late afternoon and the bazaar keeping day-trip hours. Winter (November-February) offers the clear-water river; monsoon swells it dramatically. Early morning beats the crowds year-round.
