Jalapão
JalapãO State Park, Created 2001, In One Of The Most Remote Regions Of The Brazilian Cerrado · Mateiros, Tocantins
Jalapão is a remote expanse of Cerrado in the state of Tocantins, one of the emptiest regions of Brazil, where orange sand dunes rise beneath table mountains, rivers run clear over white sand, and the ground bubbles with springs. Its signature sight is the fervedouro: a pool of spring water pushed up through sand with such force that swimmers cannot sink, and bob in the water like corks. There are several, each on private land with a short time limit per group. The dunes near the Serra do Espírito Santo glow at sunset, the Cachoeira da Velha is a broad horseshoe waterfall, and the Prainha on the Rio Novo offers rafting. The region's golden grass, capim dourado, is woven by local communities into jewellery and bags sold across Brazil. There are no paved roads through the heart of it, towns are tiny, and distances are long, so almost everyone visits on a 4x4 expedition of four or five days from Palmas, the state capital. The dry season is the only practical time. It feels like the edge of the map, which is the attraction.
Parque Estadual do Jalapão, Mateiros, TO, Mateiros, Tocantins, Brazil
Seasonal in practice. Visits run mainly in the dry season, roughly May to October; in the rains, sand roads turn to deep mud or loose sand traps and river crossings become impassable, and many operators simply stop running. The region itself has no gate or closing time, but almost every named sight is managed. The fervedouros are on private land with fixed daytime hours, entry fees and short timed slots per group, and at busy times groups queue for their turn, so a day that looks relaxed on paper is actually run to a schedule. Some sites limit numbers per day and close to new arrivals by mid afternoon. The dunes are best at sunset, and park staff may close access to fragile sections. Expect long days that start early and end after dark on the road. Fuel, cash and food are available only in the small towns, whose shops keep short hours, so operators plan stops around them. July is the busiest month and the fervedouro queues are longest then - confirm the current slot rules and fees with your operator.
