Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Wildlife Reserve · Broad Channel, New York

⚠ THE ONLY WILDLIFE REFUGE IN THE UNITED STATES REACHABLE BY SUBWAY — nearly 9,200 acres of salt marsh, open water, ponds and upland at the edge of Queens, part of GATEWAY NATIONAL RECREATION AREA. Over 330 bird species have been recorded here, it is one of the most important Atlantic Flyway stopovers in the north-east, and JFK Airport is directly across the water.

175-10 Cross Bay Boulevard, Broad Channel, New York, 11693, United States

⚠ FREE — a National Park Service site with no entrance fee, part of Gateway National Recreation Area. The refuge trails are generally open daily from sunrise to sunset; the VISITOR CENTRE keeps its own shorter hours. ⚠⚠ A FREE PERMIT IS REQUIRED TO WALK THE EAST POND TRAILS and must be collected from the visitor centre — it costs nothing and it is the most commonly missed fact about this refuge. ⚠ DOGS ARE NOT PERMITTED on the trails. ⚠ THE WEST POND WAS BREACHED BY HURRICANE SANDY IN 2012 and rebuilt — check current trail status with the Park Service, as this shoreline keeps changing. Reachable by the A train to Broad Channel.
