James A. Garfield National Historic Site

Historic House · Mentor, Ohio

Lawnfield, the Mentor farmhouse from whose front porch James Garfield ran the 1880 presidential campaign without leaving home, inventing the front porch campaign that Harding and McKinley later copied. After his assassination his widow built a fireproof memorial library wing onto the house to hold his papers, which has a fair claim to being the first presidential library.

8095 Mentor Avenue, Mentor, Ohio, 44060, United States

Visitor centre and grounds free and open most days, with reduced winter hours. The house is ranger-guided only, ticketed, capped and on a set schedule — the last tour departs well before closing.
