James Madison's Montpelier

Historic House · Montpelier Station, Virginia

The Orange County plantation where James Madison grew up, read his way through several hundred books on republics before the Constitutional Convention, and returned to live with Dolley after the presidency. The duPont family later expanded the house to fifty-five rooms; a restoration finished in 2008 took all of that back off and returned it to Madison's twenty-two. The permanent exhibition on the people enslaved here is generally reckoned the best of its kind at any American presidential site.
