Jardin

Part Of The Antioquia Colonial Heritage Network, With A Bright Blue And Yellow Basilica Menor Of The Immaculate Conception And A Plaza Of Painted Chairs. Known For The Cable Car To The Cerro Cristo Rey And The Cueva Del Esplendor. · Jardin, Antioquia

Jardin is a small coffee-hill town in the south-west of Antioquia, about 3.5 to 4 hours by road from Medellin, and one of the most photographed villages in Colombia. Its centre is the Plaza Libertador, full of painted chairs and tables under trees, with the blue and white Basilica Menor de la Inmaculada Concepcion facing it. Around the plaza are balconied houses, small cafes and the Willy jeeps parked in lines. Above town, a cable car climbs to Cerro Cristo Rey for a view, and the surrounding hills hold coffee fincas, trout lakes, a waterfall cave and a sanctuary for the Andean cock-of-the-rock, the bright red-orange bird the town loves. It is charming but small, and best for one or two nights. Weekends and holidays fill the plaza with visitors, while weekdays are calm and the evenings are cool. Roads are winding, so travel by day, and bring cash because machines and card readers fail often. The setting is lovely, but do not expect nightlife, big museums or sights beyond the town, the hills and a handful of guided outings arranged through local guides.

The plaza, streets and the basilica exterior are open at all hours and free. The basilica opens for services and for visitors during the day, usually with a break at midday. The cable car runs on certain days and hours, and may pause for weather or maintenance. Cave, finca and bird-sanctuary visits are guided and mostly in the morning, with the cock-of-the-rock tour at dawn. Many shops close on Mondays or at midday, so confirm locally.
