Jasmund Chalk Cliffs and Ruegen

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Ancient And Primeval Beech Forests, Jasmund Component (2011); White Chalk Cliffs Painted By Caspar David Friedrich, With The Koenigsstuhl At About 118 M Above The Baltic · Sassnitz, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Jasmund National Park, on the Jasmund peninsula of Ruegen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is Germany's smallest national park and protects a few thousand hectares of white chalk coast together with the old beech forest of the Stubnitz behind it. The cliffs drop straight into the Baltic and rise to about 118 m at the Koenigsstuhl; this is the coast Caspar David Friedrich painted. The UNESCO listing here is routinely misread: what was inscribed, in 2011, as part of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of Europe is the beech forest, not the chalk. The Koenigsstuhl is entered through the national park centre, which since 2023 has a looping ramped walkway out over the cliff in place of the old platform, while the free Victoria-Sicht a few minutes away is the viewpoint in almost every photograph. The cliffs collapse, regularly and sometimes fatally, and that is the most important thing to know before arriving. Beyond Jasmund the island holds Binz, Prora, Kap Arkona and a narrow-gauge steam railway, and in July and August it is genuinely full.

The cliffs, the forest paths and the Victoria-Sicht are open at all hours and cost nothing. The national park centre at the Koenigsstuhl and its cliff walkway are ticketed and open daily year round, with long summer hours and much shorter ones from November to March, last admission well before closing - confirm. The access road to the Koenigsstuhl is closed to private cars in the main season, with a shuttle bus from the Hagen car park and from Sassnitz station instead. Island resorts, boat trips and the steam railway run on a reduced timetable out of season, and some beach access stairs are shut after cliff falls at any time of year.
