Jasna Gora Monastery, Czestochowa
Poland'S National Shrine And Its Most Important Pilgrimage Site, Home To The Black Madonna Icon Of Our Lady Of Czestochowa, Kept By Pauline Monks Since 1382. Millions Come Each Year, With Huge Walking Pilgrimages Converging Around 15 August · Czestochowa, Silesian
Jasna Gora is the national shrine of Poland, a fortified monastery on a hill above Czestochowa, kept by the Pauline order since 1382. Its treasure is the Black Madonna, an icon of the Virgin and Child that Poles revere as a protector of the nation, especially since the monastery held out against a Swedish siege in 1655. The icon hangs in a chapel off the basilica, behind a screen, and is surrounded by pilgrims who pray, many on their knees. Around the church are bastioned walls, a treasury of votive gifts, a museum, an arsenal and a high tower. It is a working place of worship first and a sight second, so expect crowds, prayer, singing and little room to linger. The busiest days are around the Assumption on 15 August, when walking pilgrimages arrive from across Poland. The town itself has little else for visitors, and the monastery can feel more like a pilgrim hall than a museum, so come with respect for that.

The grounds, the basilica and the Chapel of Our Lady are open to everyone every day and cost nothing; the shrine is a working church from early morning to late evening. The chapel closes to sightseeing during Masses and the veil over the icon is raised and lowered on a daily schedule, so check the posted timetable. The evening Appeal prayer is commonly around 21:00. The treasury, museum, arsenal and tower are paid and keep shorter hours, with some closed on certain days and on Sunday mornings. Around 15 August and other big feasts the access is restricted and queues are long. Confirm all hours and closing days close to your date.
