Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve

National Historical Park And Preserve · Marrero, Louisiana

Six separate units scattered across southern Louisiana under one name, which is why almost nobody has a clear idea of what it is. The one most visitors mean is the BARATARIA PRESERVE at Marrero, twenty-six thousand acres of cypress swamp and floating marsh south of New Orleans with boardwalk trails running out over the water and alligators under them. The others are the Chalmette Battlefield, a French Quarter visitor centre, and three Acadian cultural centres in Cajun country. It is named for a pirate who helped win the Battle of New Orleans and was pardoned for it.

6588 Barataria Boulevard, Marrero, Louisiana, 70072, United States

FREE at every unit. The Barataria Preserve trails are open daily during daylight hours with the visitor centre keeping its own shorter hours; Chalmette Battlefield, the French Quarter visitor centre and the three Acadian cultural centres each keep their own schedules and some close on Mondays and Tuesdays. Ranger-led walks and canoe programmes run free on a posted schedule. Units are spread across roughly 150 miles of southern Louisiana — confirm which one you are travelling to.
