Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park

State Park · Crescent City, California

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park lies in the far north of California near Crescent City, along the Smith River, which is often described as the last major undammed river in the state. The park is one of three state parks that, with Redwood National Park, make up the Redwood National and State Parks, and it holds some of the finest old-growth coast redwoods. Stout Grove is the best-known grove and is reached by a short, mostly flat trail or by a narrow, unpaved scenic road, Howland Hill Road. The river runs clear and cold, and swimming is popular in summer. There is a campground, picnic areas and a number of trails through ferns and giant trunks. It suits hikers, photographers, campers and families who want quiet forest rather than a theme-park crowd. Fog and rain are frequent, even in summer, and the drive from Crescent City is short but the park is far from other big cities. Confirm day-use fees, road conditions and camping reservations before you go, and bring layers.

1440 Highway 199, Crescent City, California, 95531, United States

The park is generally open daily from sunrise to sunset, with the campground open through the year, though some day-use areas and roads can shut in winter storms. Howland Hill Road is a narrow unpaved road that is sometimes closed in wet weather or by fallen trees - confirm current conditions before using it. The visitor center in the park and the nearby Redwood National and State Parks centers keep seasonal and shorter hours and may close on certain days, so check before you plan a stop for maps or advice. Camping reservations open months ahead for summer, and the swimming areas on the river are best in the warm months only. Mobile signal is unreliable throughout, so confirm plans before you leave town.
