A town of two thousand people in the far northeast that was once one of the busiest inland ports in Texas — steamboats came up Big Cypress Bayou from the Red River, and the Victorian town they built is still standing almost intact. Ulysses S. Grant and Oscar Wilde both slept at the Excelsior House, which has been taking guests since 1858.
