Jelling Mounds, Runic Stones and Church
UNESCO World Heritage Site (1994): Two Royal Burial Mounds, The Runestones Of Gorm The Old And Harald Bluetooth The Stone Called Denmark'S Birth Certificate And A Church, With The Kongernes Jelling Visitor Centre · Jelling, Region of Southern Denmark
Jelling is a small town west of Vejle in east Jutland, and in its centre sits the place where the Danish kingdom announced itself in the 900s. Two huge grassy burial mounds flank a whitewashed stone church, and outside the church door stand two runestones. The smaller was raised by King Gorm the Old in memory of his wife Thyra and carries one of the earliest uses of the name Denmark. The larger, raised by their son Harald Bluetooth, says he won all of Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian, and bears the oldest image of Christ in Scandinavia - which is why it is called Denmark's birth certificate. Digs since the 2000s found a vast diamond-shaped palisade and a giant stone ship setting, now marked in white in the grass. The Kongernes Jelling visitor centre across the road explains it all. Together they were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The honest caveat: this is a quiet site of grass, stones and a small church - it is profound if you know the story and underwhelming if you do not, so start in the visitor centre, and pair it with Legoland or Vejle.

The mounds, the church grounds, the stones in their glass cases and the marked palisade are outdoors and can be seen at any reasonable hour, every day of the year. The Kongernes Jelling visitor centre is usually open daily in summer and closed on Mondays and with shorter hours in the off season, with closures around Christmas - check the current schedule. The church is normally open to visitors in the daytime except during services, weddings and funerals. Jelling has its own station on the Vejle-Herning line, roughly 15-20 minutes from Vejle, and the site is a 5-10 minute walk uphill from the platform. Nothing needs to be booked for individual visitors; groups should pre-book guided tours with the visitor centre.
