Jerez de Garcia Salinas
A Handsome Colonial Town Of Rose Pink Quarry Stone, A Main Plaza With A Porfirian Theatre, The Birthplace Of The Poet Ramon Lopez Velarde, With A Pueblo Magico Title And A Spring Fair With Horse Parades. A Calm Stop Between Zacatecas And Guadalajara · Jerez, Zacatecas
Jerez de Garcia Salinas is a Pueblo Magico in southern Zacatecas, about 50 km from the state capital on the road toward Guadalajara. Its centre is built in a warm rose-pink quarry stone, and the Plaza Principal, the parish church and the arcaded streets give the town a tidy, civic feel. The Teatro Hinojosa, a Porfirian-era theatre, is the best-known building, and the house museum of the poet Ramon Lopez Velarde, born here, honours the writer of La suave patria. The Feria de Primavera, with horse parades and charro culture, fills the streets in March and April. Local specialities include dulce de membrillo and regional cheeses. It suits travellers who enjoy architecture, literature and quiet streets, and those driving between Zacatecas and Guadalajara. It is worth a half day or an overnight, especially on a weekday. It is not for anyone seeking nightlife or big sights, and it is sleepy at siesta hours. As with any journey in Zacatecas, check current travel advice before you go.
