Jerome
National Historic Landmark District · Jerome, Arizona
A copper-mining town clinging to Cleopatra Hill on Mingus Mountain, above the Verde Valley, whose population boomed to perhaps 15,000 before the mines closed in 1953 and left it nearly empty. Artists, musicians and shopkeepers moved into its tilted brick buildings from the 1960s, and it now calls itself America's largest ghost town. Streets switch back up the hillside past galleries, wine tasting rooms and saloons, the Sliding Jail that moved downhill after mine blasting, the Audrey Headframe with a glass platform over a deep shaft, and the Douglas Mansion, now Jerome State Historic Park. The whole town is a National Historic Landmark District with views to Sedona's red rocks.
