Jesuit Block of Cordoba

UNESCO World Heritage Site (Jesuit Block And Estancias Of Cordoba, 2000); The Block Holds The National University Founded In 1613, One Of The Oldest In The Americas · Cordoba, Cordoba

The Jesuit Block is a single city block in the centre of Cordoba where the Jesuits built their headquarters for a province that stretched across much of South America. It holds the church of the Compania de Jesus, the oldest church still standing in Argentina, whose wooden ceiling was built like the upturned hull of a ship; the college that became the National University of Cordoba, founded in 1613 and one of the oldest in the Americas; and the Colegio de Monserrat, still a school. Guided tours lead through the cloisters, the old library and the crypt. The UNESCO listing also includes five Jesuit estancias in the hills around the city, the working farms whose cattle, mules and grain paid for all this; Alta Gracia, Jesus Maria and Santa Catalina are the easiest to visit. Cordoba itself is Argentina's second city, a university town full of students, colonial churches, bars and cuarteto music, and the gateway to the Sierras de Cordoba, the country's favourite hill holiday region. Most foreign visitors pass through; those who stay find a lively city.
