Jiaxiu Pavilion and Qianling Park (Guiyang)
Ming Pavilion On The Nanming River And The City Park Of Macaques And Hongfu Temple · Guiyang, Guizhou
The two places that give Guiyang its character, a short ride apart in the middle of the city. Jiaxiu Pavilion is a three-storey wooden tower on a rock in the Nanming River, built in 1598 by a provincial governor who wanted Guizhou scholars to excel in the imperial examinations - its name means the first among the excellent - and reached by the arched Floating Jade Bridge. Rebuilt several times, it is lit at night and reflected in the water, and the Cuiwei Garden beside it holds old halls and a tea house. Qianling Park, a few kilometres north, is a forested mountain inside the city, with paths climbing through camphor and pine to the Hongfu Temple, a Qing monastery on the summit ridge with views over the whole of Guiyang. The park is famous for its troop of macaques, which have learned that visitors carry food and are entirely unafraid; boats run on Qianling Lake below, and a small zoo keeps pandas. Both places are free, though the park now requires a booking.
