John Ball Zoo
Zoo · Grand Rapids, Michigan
Grand Rapids' zoo, built up the side of a steep wooded ravine on land left to the city in 1884. The hillside is the defining fact of a visit — the zoo eventually installed a funicular to carry people up it — and the terrain gives the enclosures a natural, wooded feel that flat zoos cannot manage.
