Historic House · Martinez, California

The seventeen-room Italianate house in Martinez where John Muir lived from 1890 until his death in 1914, and where he wrote most of the essays and letters that created the national park system. His study is preserved as the "scribble den", and the surrounding orchards are still worked — Muir was a commercially successful fruit rancher as well as a wilderness advocate.
