Jokkmokk and the Ajtte Museum
The Sami Cultural Centre Of Swedish Lapland: Ajtte, The National Museum Of The Mountains And Sami Culture, And The Jokkmokk Winter Market, Held Every February For More Than Four Centuries · Jokkmokk, Norrbotten County
Jokkmokk, Jahkamahkke in Lule Sami, is a small municipal town about 7 km north of the Arctic Circle and the cultural centre of Sami life in Swedish Lapland. Its main institution is Ajtte, the Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum, which tells the story of the Sami people, reindeer herding, the mountain landscape and the hydropower and mining that reshaped it, with a mountain garden (fjalltradgard) of northern plants beside it. Each February the town hosts the Jokkmokk Winter Market, said to have been held for more than 400 years, with reindeer races on the frozen lake, Sami handicraft (duodji) and tens of thousands of visitors in a town of a few thousand. The Sami here are a living people: reindeer herding is a working livelihood, duodji is a protected craft tradition, and the town is home to the Sami education centre. The honest caveat: outside the market week and the short summer, Jokkmokk is quiet, spread out and very cold, and without a car the surrounding mountains are hard to reach.

Ajtte is normally open daily in summer (roughly June to August) and on fewer days with shorter hours the rest of the year, often closed Mondays in the low season - check the current schedule and confirm it is open, as exhibitions have been renewed in recent years. The mountain garden is a summer attraction, usually open from about June to late August and closed under snow - confirm the season. The Winter Market runs for several days in early February, traditionally from the first Thursday of the month - confirm the exact dates. Getting there: SJ night trains and Norrtag trains stop at Murjek or Gallivare, where a regional bus runs on to Jokkmokk; there are flights to Gallivare and Lulea with a bus or hire car after that. Book market-week rooms many months ahead; they are often gone by the summer before.
