Jonesborough
National Register Historic District · Jonesborough, Tennessee
The oldest town in Tennessee, laid out in 1779 when the land was still North Carolina, and for a few months in 1784 the capital of the short-lived State of Franklin. Its main street is a preserved run of brick and clapboard buildings — the Chester Inn of 1797, the courthouse, the churches — walkable end to end in twenty minutes, and it is the home of the National Storytelling Festival, which fills the town for one weekend every October.
