Joslyn Art Museum

Art Museum In A 1931 Art Deco Marble Building, Expanded With A New Pavilion That Opened In 2024 (Hedge) · Omaha, Nebraska

The Joslyn Art Museum is Nebraska's largest art museum, standing on a rise at the western edge of downtown Omaha beside the Creighton University campus. The original 1931 building is an Art Deco temple faced in pink Georgia marble, commissioned by Sarah Joslyn as a memorial to her husband George, a wealthy Omaha businessman (the family story is usually told this way; treat the details as a claim). A glass addition by Norman Foster followed in the 1990s, and after a closure of roughly two years the museum reopened in 2024 with a new wing by the Norwegian firm Snohetta, the Rhonda and Howard Hawks Pavilion. The collection runs from European works through nineteenth-century American painting of the West to modern and contemporary art, and its best-known holding is a large collection of Karl Bodmer's watercolours from an 1830s expedition up the Missouri River. General admission has been free in recent years. It is a handsome, well-run city art museum worth about two hours: see it if you are in Omaha, but it is not a reason on its own to drive across the state.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: open roughly 10 am to 4 or 5 pm on most days, with a later evening in some weeks, and closed on Mondays and on major holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day; after the 2024 reopening the closed days may have changed. The cafe and shop keep shorter hours than the galleries. The traps that ruin a day are arriving on a Monday, coming for a ticketed show whose weekend slots have sold out, finding Fountain Court closed for a private event and planning lunch at a cafe that has already shut. Confirm current times before relying on them.
