Juan de Fuca Provincial Park
A Coastal Park With The 47 Km Juan De Fuca Marine Trail, A Rugged Hike Linking China Beach, Sombrio Beach, Parkinson Creek And Botanical Beach, With Surf, Sea Caves, Waterfalls And Tide Pools. A Shorter And Wetter Alternative To The West Coast Trail, With Big Rainfall And Mud · Port Renfrew, British Columbia
Juan de Fuca Provincial Park is a narrow coastal strip on the south-west shore of Vancouver Island, between Port Renfrew and China Beach, about 75 km west of Victoria (confirm distances). Its famous feature is the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, a rugged route of roughly 47 km along cliffs, forest, surge channels and beaches that links China Beach, Sombrio Beach, Parkinson Creek and Botanical Beach (confirm length and trailhead names). It is shorter and less crowded than the West Coast Trail, but wet, muddy and steep, with ladders, roots and creek crossings, and tides matter on some sections. Day visitors come to walk to Mystic Beach, surf at Sombrio or explore tide pools near Port Renfrew. Camps are basic, with no fuel or shops on the trail, and the weather can be wild at any season. Allow a full day for even a short section, carry food and water, and plan your return before dark, because the coast is remote.

The park is open all year, but most visitors use it between about May and September, when days are long and rain is lighter. Trailheads and the roads that serve them are open at any hour, though daylight is short in winter and mud makes the trail slow. Backcountry camps may need a reservation or permit, and rules differ by season, so confirm with the provincial park service before you go. The trail is tide-dependent in places, so check a tide table for the days you plan to walk. Storms between October and March can close sections or make beaches unsafe.
