Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse

Lighthouse · Jupiter, Florida

A red brick tower of 1860 on a shell mound above the Loxahatchee, designed by George Meade — the engineer who three years later commanded the Union army at Gettysburg. Confederate sympathisers disabled the light in 1861 by stealing its lens machinery; it was relit in 1866 and has worked ever since, making it the oldest surviving structure in Palm Beach County.
