Kaaterskill Falls

Waterfall · Haines Falls, New York

A two-tiered waterfall of roughly 260 feet in Kaaterskill Clove, taller in total drop than Niagara and a fraction of its volume. Thomas Cole painted it in 1826 and effectively launched the Hudson River School with it, and for most of the nineteenth century this was one of the most visited natural sites in America — the Catskill Mountain House above it was a resort for the whole eastern seaboard.
