Kadifekale (Mount Pagos)
A Hill Top Castle With Views Over The Gulf Of Izmir, Built On The Hellenistic Acropolis By Lysimachus, With Walls And Cisterns And A Sprawling Panorama Of The City. An Evening Viewpoint Reached By Bus Or Taxi, With Surrounding Neighbourhoods Best Visited By Day · Konak, Izmir
Kadifekale, meaning Velvet Castle, is the hilltop fortress of Mount Pagos above the old centre of Izmir, roughly 2 to 3 km east of Konak Square and rising about 185 m above the Gulf (confirm). The hill was the acropolis of ancient Smyrna in the Hellenistic period, when the city was re-founded on the slopes by Alexander's successors, likely under Lysimachus (confirm), and it was later repaired by the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. Long stretches of wall and several towers survive, along with the remains of vaulted cisterns and a small mosque or tomb within the enclosure. The main reason to come is the view: the whole bay, the harbour, the city roofs and the far mountains open from the walls, and the sunset over the water draws crowds of locals. The hill is reached by city bus or taxi from Konak, and the surrounding neighbourhoods are best visited by day. Plan about an hour for the walls and the view, and leave before it is late.

The castle grounds are usually open daily from about 08:00 until sunset, and the walls and viewpoints may be reachable at any hour in practice, though gates and lights vary - confirm. A ticket may or may not be charged (confirm). The tea garden and kiosks near the top open from the morning to late evening in season, and are busiest at sunset, with several closing in winter. Evening visits are popular with locals, but the neighbourhoods below are quieter after dark, so visit in daylight or go in a group (confirm conditions on the day).
