Kahramanmaras Castle

A Hill Fortress Rebuilt By The Ottomans On Ancient Foundations, With An Old City Around It Known For Its Stretchy Ice Cream (Dondurma), A Grand Mosque And A Bazaar. A City Centre Stop With A Local Food Story, In A Region Where Reconstruction After The 2023 Earthquakes Is Under Way · Dulkadiroglu, Kahramanmaras

Kahramanmaras Castle stands on a low mound in the centre of Kahramanmaras, an old city on a wide plain below the Ahir mountains in south-east Turkiye. The fortress is thought to rest on much older foundations, and the Ottomans rebuilt walls and towers on the rise, so the surviving stone is a patchwork of repairs rather than one period (confirm). From the mound the eye runs across the Grand Mosque, the bazaar roofs and a valley of orchards and fields. Below it lies the old market, home to Maras dondurma, the dense, stretchy ice cream made with milk, sugar, salep and mastic, worked with long paddles and sold by vendors who tease every customer. The city and its province were struck by the earthquakes of February 2023, and parts of the centre are still being rebuilt, so access, fencing and the museum may differ from older guides (confirm everything before you travel). Allow two to three hours with a stop in the bazaar.

The mound and its surroundings are normally reachable during the day, often from about 08:00 until dusk, but after the 2023 earthquakes sections may be fenced, under repair or closed without notice, so ask at the municipality or your hotel (confirm). The ethnography museum nearby keeps daytime hours and is usually closed on one weekday (confirm). Bazaar shops and dondurma stalls run from about 09:00 until late evening, with the busiest trade after the afternoon heat. Prayer times thin the market at midday on Friday. Winter days are short and cold, and snow can close the hill paths.
