Kaibab National Forest

National Forest · Williams, Arizona

The forest that surrounds the Grand Canyon on both sides: the Williams and Tusayan districts south of the South Rim, and the North Kaibab Plateau leading to the North Rim, where the Kaibab squirrel, with its white tail, lives nowhere else on Earth. Its roads include the Kaibab Plateau-North Rim Parkway through high meadows and aspen, closed in winter, and it offers free or cheap camping close to the park, the Keyhole Sink petroglyphs, Bill Williams Mountain and Sycamore Canyon. Fires in 2025 burned parts of the North Kaibab. Its North Kaibab Plateau is also a stronghold for the bison and California condors that range around the Grand Canyon.

800 South 6th Street, Williams, Arizona, 86046, United States

Open year-round; AZ 67 on the North Kaibab closes from about December to mid-May. Check fs.usda.gov/kaibab.
