Kaikoura
A Peninsula Town Where A Deep Offshore Canyon Brings Sperm Whales Close To Shore Year Round, The Only Place In The Country With Reliable Whale Watching In All Four Seasons, Alongside Dusky Dolphin Swims, A New Zealand Fur Seal Colony At The Peninsula Walkway And Crayfish Sold Straight Off The Boats At Roadside Stalls · Kaikoura, Canterbury
Kaikoura sits on a narrow peninsula on the Canterbury coast, built where the Kaikoura Canyon drops to more than 1,000 metres within a few kilometres of shore, drawing deep-diving sperm whales close to land in every month of the year - the only place in New Zealand where whale watching runs reliably across all four seasons, not just in summer. Dusky dolphins travel here in large pods and swim boats regularly join them. A colony of New Zealand fur seals hauls out along the peninsula walkway, close enough to watch from the rocks without a boat at all. The town itself is small and unglamorous away from the water - a single main street, a handful of motels, and roadside stalls selling crayfish pulled straight from boats that morning, the species the town is named for in Maori (kai, food; koura, crayfish). The Seaward Kaikoura Range rises behind the coast, often snow-capped above the whale watch boats below. Weather decides more here than any timetable: whale watch trips are cancelled, not delayed, when the swell turns too rough to run safely.
On a peninsula on the Canterbury coast, about 2.5 hours north of Christchurch, Kaikoura, Canterbury, New Zealand
Kaikoura township has no gates and is open at all hours, with roadside crayfish stalls typically open from mid-morning to early evening, weather and catch depending. Whale watching, dolphin swim and seal walkway tours run on fixed daytime timetables, roughly 6:30am to 4pm depending on operator and season, and are cancelled rather than delayed when sea conditions turn unsafe - rebooking onto a standby sailing is the usual outcome, not a refund guarantee. The seal colony at Point Kean is viewable at any hour of daylight, free of charge.
