Kakabeka Falls drops about 40 m over a shale ledge on the Kaministiquia River, roughly 30 km west of Thunder Bay, and is called the Niagara of the North. It sits in Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park, with boardwalks on both banks, a river-front campground and a small village on the highway. It suits families, photographers, road-trippers and anyone passing between Thunder Bay and the west. The falls are impressive after spring melt and heavy rain, thinner in dry late summer, and in winter the spray builds ice formations that draw visitors. Nearby is the old fur-trade Mountain Portage trail used by voyageurs to bypass the falls. It is a short stop, not a full-day destination: most people need an hour or two. The spray makes boards slick, and the park charges a parking or day-use fee. Thunder Bay, the Terry Fox Monument and the Sleeping Giant are other stops nearby, so the falls fit neatly into a longer day.

The falls and boardwalks can generally be visited all year, but park services follow the season. The campground and day-use facilities are fullest from late spring to early autumn, with limited services in winter. Ontario Parks sets the day-use fee and entry hours, which change by year and season, so check the current listing before you go, and confirm whether a gate or fee booth is staffed. In winter the boardwalks may be icy, partly closed or unplowed, and the spray ice is best seen in cold snaps. Daylight, weather and river flow decide the best time of day. The village on the highway keeps its own shop and cafe hours.
