Kalaupapa National Historical Park
National Monument · Kalaupapa, Hawaii
A National Historical Park on the Kalaupapa peninsula of Molokaʻi, nearly coterminous with Kalawao County, established by Congress in 1980 to preserve the two settlements where people with Hansen's disease were forcibly exiled between 1866 and 1969. Some 8,500 people lived and died there over that century. It is reached only by a cliff trail, by small aircraft or by sea, and a small number of former patients chose to remain as residents. This is their home before it is anything else.

⚠ THIS PARK IS NOT OPEN IN THE ORDINARY SENSE AND MOST VISITORS CANNOT ENTER IT. Access to the settlement has been closed to visitors for an extended period and, even when open, has always required a permit and a licensed tour, with a minimum age of 16 and no casual visiting of any kind. ⚠ CHECK THE NPS PAGE FOR CURRENT STATUS BEFORE MAKING ANY PLAN - the position has changed repeatedly. THE KALAUPAPA OVERLOOK IN PALAAU STATE PARK, ON TOP OF THE CLIFF, IS OPEN, FREE AND REQUIRES NO PERMIT, and for the great majority of visitors that is the visit.
