Kalkan
A Whitewashed Harbour Town Of Ottoman Greek Stone Houses Climbing A Hillside Above A Sheltered Bay, With Boutique Hotels, Rooftop Restaurants, The Kaputas Beach Nearby And Boat Trips To Kekova. One Of The Most Polished Small Resorts On The Turquoise Coast, Quiet Outside The Summer Season · Kalkan, Antalya
Kalkan is a small harbour town on the Lycian coast, in Antalya province, built on a steep hillside above a sheltered bay. It began as a Greek fishing and trading village, and the pale stone houses with wooden balconies and bougainvillea that climb from the quay date from that time, before the population exchange of the 1920s (confirm). The old town survived as a cluster of narrow lanes and steps, and today most of the houses are boutique hotels, villas and rooftop restaurants looking over the water toward the Taurus mountains. There is no wide sandy beach in town, so people swim from platforms and beach clubs at the harbour or take a short ride to Kaputas Beach, a small cove reached by a long stairway down a cliff. Boat trips run to Kekova, the sunken city coast, and Patara, with its famous long beach and Lycian ruins, lies about 10 km away. Kalkan is polished, calm and a little expensive, and it is at its best from late spring to autumn, when the restaurants fill the terraces and the harbour lights come on at dusk.

The town is open all year and walking the old lanes and the harbour front costs nothing at any hour. Restaurants, shops and beach clubs follow the season: most are busy from about May to October and many close or shorten their days from November to March - confirm before booking a winter trip. Beach clubs usually open mid-morning and stay open until dusk, and harbour restaurants serve dinner late, often until near midnight in July and August. Boat trips normally leave between about 09:30 and 10:30 and return in the late afternoon (confirm with the operator). Kaputas Beach is open to the public all day, though the cafe and sunbed rentals are seasonal.
