Kalmar Castle

The Moated Renaissance Castle Where The Kalmar Union Of 1397 Joined Denmark, Norway And Sweden, Rebuilt By The Vasa Kings, Beside Kalmar'S Baroque Old Town And Cathedral · Kalmar, Kalmar County

Kalmar Castle rises straight out of the water at the southern edge of Kalmar, a moated fortress on the Kalmarsund, the strait between the mainland and Oland. It began as a medieval defensive tower and grew into the key to Sweden's border with Denmark, which then held Skane and Blekinge just to the south. In 1397 the Kalmar Union was sealed here, joining Denmark, Norway and Sweden under one crown until Sweden broke away in the 1520s. Gustav Vasa's sons Erik XIV and Johan III later rebuilt the grim fortress as a Renaissance palace, and their painted and panelled royal rooms are the heart of a visit today. People come for those interiors, for the walls and bastions round the moat, for the summer activities aimed at children, and to combine the castle with Kalmar's baroque cathedral and the Kronan warship finds at the county museum. The honest caveat: many rooms are sparsely furnished, some of the finest are small, and in July the castle is crowded with families on their way to or from Oland.
