Kalundborg Church of Our Lady

Twelfth Century Brick Church With Five Towers On A Greek Cross Plan, Above The Medieval Upper Town Of Kalundborg · Kalundborg, Region Zealand

Vor Frue Kirke, the Church of Our Lady, stands at the top of the old upper town of Kalundborg in west Zealand, roughly 100 km and about 1 hour 20 minutes by train or car from Copenhagen. It was built in brick from the late twelfth century, traditionally credited to the magnate Esbern Snare, brother of Bishop Absalon, and it is unlike any other medieval church in Denmark: a Greek-cross plan with four short arms, each ending in an octagonal tower, and a square central tower rising over the crossing, five towers in all. Seen from the fjord or the approach roads, the cluster of towers is Kalundborg's symbol. Around it lie the quiet cobbled lanes of the upper town, with old merchant houses and the town museum. People come for the unusual building, a short historic walk and the views. The honest caveat: it is a single church in a working port and industrial town; the interior is plain and the visit takes under an hour, so it suits a stop on the way to the Samso ferry or a west Zealand tour.
