Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is a pilgrimage complex on Zar hill, about 35 km south-west of Krakow, begun in the early 1600s around a Bernardine monastery and a baroque basilica. Its core is a landscape of more than 40 small chapels and paths in the woods that copy Jerusalem: the Way of the Cross follows the Passion of Christ, and a second path, Mary's Way, follows her life and death. The whole park is a UNESCO site. On ordinary days it is quiet, wooded and mostly empty, a place for a walk of a few km between chapels. Holy Week is another world: the Passion play draws crowds counted in the hundreds of thousands over several days, and the town fills with pilgrims and traffic. The chapels are small and many are locked, so do not expect a museum. The basilica is the one big interior. Wadowice, the birthplace of John Paul II, is a separate town nearby and not part of the complex. Allow time for the walking, because the chapels sit well apart, some paths are steep, and a bus from Krakow takes about an hour on a normal weekday outside Holy Week.

The woods, the paths and the outdoor chapel grounds are FREE and open at all hours of daylight; there is no gate and no ticket. The basilica and monastery church are open most of the day but are CLOSED to sightseers during Mass, and weekday and Sunday Mass times differ, so check before you go. Small chapels are often locked outside services and big feasts. The monastery itself is a working house and is CLOSED to visitors except by arrangement. Holy Week (Palm Sunday to Easter) has special timetables, road closures and extra services, and the Passion play runs on fixed days around Good Friday. Confirm all times close to your date; the Assumption feast in August is also crowded.
