Kalymnos

One Of The World'S Great Sport Climbing Islands: Thousands Of Bolted Limestone Routes Above The West Coast Road, On An Island That Lived By Sponge Diving · Massouri, South Aegean

Kalymnos is a bare limestone island in the Dodecanese that became, in about twenty-five years, one of the best sport-climbing destinations in the world. Grey and orange walls rise straight off the west-coast road above Massouri, Armeos and Arginonta, with thousands of bolted routes, caves full of stalactite tufas and a view across a narrow strait to the islet of Telendos. The count is now beyond 4,500 routes and a 2025 guidebook added roughly 355 more and about 14 new sectors; no permit is needed and the bolting is well maintained. Before climbing arrived the island lived by sponge diving, and it has not forgotten what that cost: the paralysis suffered by divers in primitive suits is part of the island's memory and its songs, and Pothia, the working port town, still has sponge workshops. There is also a green fjord at Vathys, sea caves, and Telendos, a car-free islet reached by small boat. Be honest with non-climbers: the beaches are modest and pebbly, summer rock is too hot to climb, and there is not much else to do.

The crags are open access, free, and climbable at any hour; no permit, ticket or registration is required, and the approach paths from the road are open all year. Climbing shops and guiding offices in Massouri keep long hours from about April to early November and mostly close in winter. The archaeological museum and the sponge workshops in Pothia open on short daytime hours, often mornings, and can close one weekday or for a long lunch - confirm locally. Boats to Telendos run from Myrties through the day and into the evening in season, about ten minutes each way, weather allowing; the Kos ferry from Mastichari crosses in roughly 30-50 minutes several times a day. Book rooms months ahead for the October climbing festival and for Greek Easter; many west-coast hotels close from November to March.
