Kamogawa Sea World is a seaside aquarium on the Pacific coast of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba, built on a headland above the water. Its main show is the orca performance in a large outdoor pool, one of few places in Japan that keeps these whales - confirm what is on show. The same pool area hosts beluga and dolphin shows, and a separate stage has sea lions - confirm the line-up. Indoors, a huge tank of local fish follows the Kuroshio current, with sardines, rays and sharks in a mix typical of the Boso coast - confirm the details. It suits families and children most of all, and couples will enjoy the sea views and the time outdoors. Shows follow a timetable, so plan the day around them. It is a fair trip from Tokyo by express bus or train, worth it for the orcas and a day out, and less so if you have been to larger aquariums or object to animals in captivity. Weekends and school holidays are crowded.
