Kangiqsualujjuaq is an Inuit village of roughly 900 to 1,000 people on the west bank of the George River, a short way upstream from Ungava Bay in the east of Nunavik. It is reached only by scheduled flight, normally Air Inuit from Montreal through Kuujjuaq (confirm), and it is not a sightseeing town: there is no old quarter, no tour desk and no fixed programme. What it offers is the river and the gateway it makes. The tides of Ungava Bay are among the highest in the world, the George River runs with salmon and char, and the road to Kuururjuaq National Park and the northern end of the Torngat Mountains starts here by boat or charter. Services are a Co-op store, a Northern store, a small hotel and a few takeaways (confirm). Weather, tide and ice rule every plan, so allow spare days, ask the park office before booking and hire local outfitters and guides for any trip beyond the houses, since the river and the mountains are no place for a party on its own.

Kangiqsualujjuaq keeps no visiting hours because it is a living village. The Co-op, the Northern store, the hotel, the park desk and the community hall keep their own hours, often roughly 9 to 5 on weekdays with a shorter day at the weekend - confirm by phone. Fishing and river trips run roughly June to September while the George River is open, and snowmobile trips run roughly February to April. Midsummer brings almost endless light, while midwinter brings long darkness and fewer services for visitors. Walking the river bank and the streets costs nothing at any hour.
