Kangiqsujuaq
An Inuit Village On A Deep Hudson Strait Bay, A Staging Point For Visits To The Pingualuit Crater And The Nunavik Wilderness, With Soapstone Carving, Sea Ice Trips And The Wakeham Bay Cliffs. A Very Remote And Scenic Village With A Small But Active Cultural Scene · Kangiqsujuaq, Quebec
Kangiqsujuaq is an Inuit village of about 800 people on Wakeham Bay, a deep inlet on the Hudson Strait coast of Nunavik. It is reached only by scheduled flight, and it is not a sightseeing town: there is no old quarter, no tour desk and no fixed programme. The village is the nearest community to the Pingualuit crater, a round, deep lake about 3 km across that fills the crater of an ancient meteorite impact inside Pingualuit National Park, roughly 90 to 100 km south. The crater is reached by chartered aircraft, helicopter or snowmobile with park staff and local guides, and plans are made well in advance. In the village itself, visitors find soapstone carvers, a Co-op store, a Northern store, a small hotel and a few takeaways (confirm), with tall cliffs over the bay. Weather and ice rule every schedule, so allow spare days, ask the park office before booking and hire local guides for any trip beyond the houses.

Kangiqsujuaq keeps no visiting hours because it is a living village. The Co-op, the Northern store, the hotel and any park office or community hall keep their own hours, often roughly 9 to 5 on weekdays with shorter days at weekends - confirm by phone. Crater visits run roughly July to September by air and roughly March to May by snowmobile, and boat trips run in open water from about July. Midsummer sun hardly sets, while midwinter is dark with few services for visitors. Walking the bay and the streets costs nothing at any hour. Sundays and public holidays are quiet, so buy food and fuel the day before.
