Kankakee Sands
Nature Preserve · Morocco, Indiana
A Nature Conservancy restoration of about 8,000 acres of black-soil prairie, sand savanna and wetland in Newton County, on ground that was drained farmland and before that part of the Grand Kankakee Marsh. A herd of American bison was introduced in 2016 to graze it, and they are visible from a roadside viewing area on US 41. It is a working restoration rather than a park — there are no facilities to speak of — and it sits on the Illinois line in the flattest part of Indiana.
3294 North U.S. Highway 41, Morocco, Indiana, 47963, United States
Open at all times, free. The bison viewing area on US 41 is a roadside pull-off. Areas close periodically for prescribed burns. There are no facilities of any kind on the preserve.
