Kanlica

A Small Seafront Village Famous For Its Thick Yogurt With Powdered Sugar, Its Waterside Square, Its Mosque And Its 19th Century Wooden Mansions. A Restful Stop On A Ferry Or Road Trip Along The Asian Coast · Beykoz, Istanbul

Kanlica is a Bosphorus village on the Asian shore in the Beykoz district, about 15 km north of Uskudar, and it is known across Istanbul for one thing: thick, creamy yogurt served in small bowls and dusted with powdered sugar. The village square sits right on the water beside a ferry pier, with a domed mosque, a few shady plane trees and rows of cafe tables facing the strait, and the yogurt shops line the lane that leads inland. Behind the square a hillside of wooden houses and old mansions climbs toward the Khedive Palace, and along the shore a string of 19th-century yali stand directly on the water. Kanlica is a village to visit slowly: arrive by ferry or bus, eat yogurt at the quay, walk the shore road toward Anadolu Hisari and the Kucuksu Pavilion, and watch large ships move past a few hundred metres from your table. The square is calm on weekdays and lively at weekends, and the yogurt lines are longest at sunset.
