Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center
Smithsonian Affiliate · Hutchinson, Kansas
A space museum in Hutchinson, Kansas, that began in 1962 as a planetarium under a chicken-house dome on the state fairgrounds and is now, improbably, one of the two or three most significant space collections in the world. It holds the flown Apollo 13 command module Odyssey, the Liberty Bell 7 Mercury capsule recovered from three miles down in the Atlantic, an SR-71 Blackbird and a German V-2 — and what is generally described as the largest collection of Russian and Soviet space hardware outside Moscow. Its own workshop restored several of them, and restores artefacts for other museums.
1100 North Plum Street, Hutchinson, Kansas, 67501, United States
Open most days, generally 10 AM - 5 PM with reduced Sunday hours and some seasonal variation; closed on major holidays. Museum, dome theatre, planetarium and the live lab show are ticketed separately or as a combination — the combination is the sensible buy. Free parking.
