Kansas State Capitol

National Register Of Historic Places · Topeka, Kansas

A French Renaissance limestone building in Topeka that took thirty-seven years to finish, from 1866 to 1903, and carries a copper dome taller than the one on the United States Capitol. Two things make it worth a detour rather than a photograph: the John Steuart Curry murals in the second-floor rotunda, whose Tragic Prelude — a wild-eyed John Brown with a rifle and a Bible over a burning Kansas — is one of the most reproduced images in American art; and the fact that you can climb 296 steps to the top of the dome and walk outside on it.

300 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas, 66612, United States

FREE. Generally open weekdays 8 AM - 5 PM with weekend opening in summer only; closed on state holidays. The dome climb is free but by guided tour on a limited daily schedule and should be booked ahead through the Kansas Historical Society. The legislature sits from January to around May.
