Karkaraly National Park
Karkaraly State National Natural Park (1998): Isolated Pine Clad Granite Hills With Lakes, Rock Formations And The Kent Mountain On The Steppe Plateau. A Summer And Autumn Holiday Area For Central Kazakhstan. · Karkaraly, Karaganda
Karkaraly is another island of pine-clad granite hills in the middle of the Kazakh steppe, set up as a state national park in 1998 and reached from the small town of Karkaraly, about 220 km by road from Karaganda. Like Bayanaul it is hills rather than real mountains, but after hours of flat grassland the pines, rock outcrops and small lakes feel like a relief. The best-known point is Kent mountain, a granite hill that locals treat as special and that gives a view over the surrounding steppe. The town has a few guesthouses and cafes, a market and an old Russian-era centre, and there are yurt camps and cabins in the forest in summer. It suits people already in Karaganda or driving between Astana and the east who have a spare day or two. Autumn colour in the birch is a good reason to go in September. It is a quiet, modest place, not a highlight of Kazakhstan, and the drive is long, so decide before you start whether the forest and lakes justify the detour. Park fees apply, so confirm at the gate.
Pine and granite uplands in the Kazakh Hills south-east of Karaganda, reached from the town of Karkaraly (about 220 km by road), with lakes, a sacred Kent hill and trails, Karkaraly, Karaganda, Kazakhstan
The park is open all year, but facilities are seasonal. The town of Karkaraly, the forest tracks and the main viewpoints can be reached in daylight, and the entrance or ranger post normally collects park fees by day. Exact gate times are not fixed here, so confirm locally. Guesthouses, cabins, yurt camps and cafes in the forest run roughly June to September and are thin or closed in winter. Dry weather can bring fire restrictions that close some routes. There is no lighting on the trails, and the town shuts early, so plan to be off the hill before dusk.
