Kartchner Caverns State Park

State Park · Benson, Arizona

A living limestone cave in the Whetstone Mountains, still growing because it is wet, discovered in 1974 by two cavers who kept it secret for fourteen years until the state could protect it; it opened to the public in 1999. Guided tours follow paved trails through chambers of soda straws, draperies and Kubla Khan, a column about 58 feet tall. The Big Room is closed each spring and summer while a colony of bats raises its young. Tours are the only way in, photography is not allowed, and humidity stays near 99 per cent. The Big Room tour runs only from mid-October to mid-April, and children under seven cannot join it.
