Kas
Ancient Antiphellos; A Lycian Harbour Town With A Hellenistic Theatre, Rock Tombs In The Streets, And The Country'S Principal Diving Centre · Kas, Antalya
Kas is built on top of Antiphellos and has never quite tidied it away: Lycian sarcophagi stand in the middle of streets, a rock tomb sits at the head of a lane of shops, and a small Hellenistic theatre looks out over the sea from the edge of town, open, free and unfenced. The town itself is a steep grid of white houses and bougainvillea running down to a harbour, with a peninsula of small hotels behind it, and it is quieter and more grown-up than the resorts on either side. What people come for now is the water. Kas is the diving capital of Turkiye, with clear deep water and wrecks within a short boat ride, and it is the launching point for sea kayaking over the sunken city at Kekova. There is no sandy beach at all - you swim off concrete platforms and boats - and whether that is a problem is the single thing to know before booking. Everything else about the town - the theatre, the tombs, the lanes - is free and open at any hour.
