Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument
National Monument · Patten, Maine
Eighty-seven thousand acres of mountain and forest on the East Branch of the Penobscot, east of Baxter State Park, given to the nation in 2016 and among the least developed units in the National Park System. There is no visitor centre worth the name, no fee and almost no infrastructure - and it holds some of the darkest skies in the eastern United States, certified as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary.
100 Katahdin Woods and Waters, Patten, Maine, 04765, United States
FREE and open year round, and ⚠ THERE IS NO ENTRANCE FEE AND NO GATE - which is unusual for a national monument and is the first thing to understand. ⚠ THE ROADS ARE THE VISIT: access is by unpaved logging roads shared with active timber traffic, there is no petrol, no shop and effectively no mobile signal inside the monument, and winter access is limited to what you can ski, snowshoe or snowmobile. Loaded log trucks have right of way and they do not slow down.
