Kattegatcentret
Aquarium At Grenaa Harbour With A Large Shark Tank And Underwater Tunnel, Seals And Kattegat Sea Life, Next To Grenaa Beach · Grenaa, Central Denmark Region
Kattegatcentret is a mid-sized public aquarium at the harbour of Grenaa, on the eastern tip of the Djursland peninsula, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes from Aarhus by car or light rail. It opened in 1993 and is devoted mainly to the sea life of the Kattegat, the strait between Denmark and Sweden, alongside bigger ocean animals. Its best-known feature is a large shark tank with an underwater tunnel where sharks and rays glide over your head; there is also an outdoor seal pool with harbour seals, touch pools where children can handle crabs and starfish, and tanks showing the fish, jellyfish and creatures of the local waters. Families come as part of a Djursland holiday, often on a rainy day or combined with Grenaa beach next door, Djurs Sommerland or Ree Park. The honest caveat: it is a regional aquarium, not a giant one like the Blue Planet near Copenhagen, most people see it in two or three hours, and on wet summer days it can be very crowded.
