Keeper of the Plains
Modern Monument · Wichita, Kansas
A forty-four-foot steel figure standing at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas rivers in Wichita, arms raised to the sky, made by Blackbear Bosin — a Kiowa and Comanche artist — and given to the city in 1974. It was raised onto a thirty-foot promontory in 2006 and linked to both banks by cable suspension bridges. Every evening, weather permitting, fire pots at its base are lit for fifteen minutes, and the whole city knows what time that happens.
